LOT DETAILS

Fair condition military magazine fed bolt action rifle. 25" barrel, bore appears to be somewhat clean with some shine and brightness also very good rifling showing wear. Bluing on the gun appears to be about 90%ish under all the grime with some surface rust. Three piece walnut stocks with a very dark reddish-brown finish with dings, bangs, scraps, and scuffs from age and use. There really aren't any cracks but a few chips, but some gouges and some Arabic/Hindi? engraved into the buttstock and also some dingy white paint on it. Missing the brass dial on the buttstock. The bolt opens and closes properly but needs to be cleaned for a smoother action. Trigger and firing action seem to work properly, but are missing a screw. Does not come with the mag. It also has D.P. stamped into the metal in several places. It has brass buttplate with storage compartment. This is a great project for all collectors of military arms. This would be a great addition to any collection or maybe an arsenal when cleaned up!!

Due to age, Consult a gunsmith: If you are unsure about the firearm's safety, have it inspected by a qualified gunsmith to assess its condition.

The 1918 Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SHTLE) No. 1 Mk III* .303 British is one of the most iconic, widely produced military bolt-action rifles in history.

Here is a comprehensive breakdown of its history, the meaning of its complex naming markings, and its technical specifications.

Decoding the Name & Markings
The stamping on the right side of the metal collar (the wrist/socket) beneath the bolt handle tells the exact story of the rifle:
  • Crown / "G.R.": Stands for Georgius Rex, indicating it was manufactured during the reign of King George V.
  • 1918: The exact year of manufacture, making this a late-World War I production piece.
  • SHTLE: An early abbreviation for "Short, Magazine, Lee-Enfield". "Short" referred to its intermediate length, which replaced having separate long rifles for infantry and short carbines for cavalry.
  • No. 1 Mk III*: Originally adopted as the Mk III in 1907, the British military changed its naming system in 1926, redesignating it as the Rifle No. 1 Mk III.
  • The Asterisk (*): This is the most crucial part of a 1918 model. Introduced in late 1915 to speed up mass production during WWI, the "Star" variant eliminated complex features to lower manufacturing costs.
The Wartime Simplifications (The Star * Changes)
Compared to the pre-war Mk III, your 1918 Mk III* model had several features removed to save machining hours:
  1. No Magazine Cut-Off: Pre-war models had a metal plate that blocked the magazine, forcing soldiers to load single rounds until ordered to use the internal 10-round supply. This was deleted.
  2. No Volley Sights: The long-range dial sights located on the left side of the wood stock (used for massed, long-distance volley fire up to 2,800 yards) were removed.
  3. No Rear Sight Windage Adjustment: The rear sight could still be adjusted for distance but no longer featured a screw wheel for windage (left/right) adjustments.

Caliber .303 British (typically firing the 174-grain Mk VII pointed spitzer round)
Action Bolt-action (Cock-on-closing system, making the cycle extremely fast)
Capacity 10-round detachable box (loaded from the top via two 5-round charger clips)
Barrel Length 25.2 inches
Overall Length 44.5 inches
Weight Approximately 8 lbs, 10 oz (unloaded)
Effective Range Around 600 yards (max range up to 2,500 yards)

Historical Significance & Legacy
  • The Mad Minute: Because the bolt cocks when closing (unlike the Mauser system which cocks on opening), it has an incredibly smooth and fast stroke. British soldiers were famously trained to fire 20 to 30 aimed shots per minute, a drill known as the "Mad Minute".
  • The Blunt Nose: The rifle features a distinctive nose cap with protective "wings" to shield the front sight blade. It also incorporates a lug to mount the long Pattern 1907 Sword Bayonet.
  • Extended Service: Though the No. 4 Mk I rifle began replacing it during WWII, the No. 1 Mk III* remained the primary standard-issue arm for Australian and Indian forces throughout World War II and beyond.

Identifying Your Rifle's Origin
Look at the right side of the metal band right below the bolt handle (the butt socket). It will tell you exactly who built it in 1918. You will generally see a Royal Crown symbol followed by:
  • ENFIELD: Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF) Enfield (UK).
  • B.S.A. Co.: Birmingham Small Arms Company (UK).
  • L.S.A. Co.: London Small Arms Company (UK).
  • LITHGOW: Lithgow Small Arms Factory (Australia—who coincidentally started SMLE production in exactly 1913).
